SELF-STYLED BISHOP CHARGED WITH MURDER OF TWO FOLLOWERS.
New York (UPI) -- Discovery of the butchered and charred bodies of two teen-age 'nuns' in a remote Catskill Mountain lake led to the indictment Thursday of self-styled 'Bishop' DeVernon LeGrand on four murder charges. LeGrand, 51, who heads St. John's Pentacostal Church of Our Lord in Brooklyn, was charged with killing two sisters who were 'nuns' in his church and two of his former wives, beginning in 1963, Brooklyn District Attorney Eugene Gold said.

LeGrand's son, Steven LeGrand, also was charged with murder in the deaths of the 'nuns,' Gladys Rivera Steward, 18, and Yvonne Rivera, 16, last Oct. 3 at the church. Mrs. Steward was the wife of another of LeGrand's sons, Darryl Steward. Gold charged LeGrand also killed Ann Sorise, 30, in September, 1963, and Ernestine Timmons, 30, in May, 1970.

The bodies of the two former wives have not been found, he said, adding that he did not expect any more bodies to turn up. LeGrand is serving a five to 15-year sentence on rape and bribery convictions and Steven is awaiting trial on another charge. Another son, Nocondo, 20, was convicted in the rape case.

LeGrand reportedly earned more than $250,000 a year by sending the women of his church, dressed as nuns, into the streets to beg for money. Gold said the remains of the Rivera sisters were found in Briscoe Lake, near LeGrand's farm on the outskirts of Liberty, N.Y.

'Bones and other parts of human bodies were found as a result of dredging,' Gold said. A former caretaker at the church, Frank Holman, said in an affidavit that he helped LeGrand dismember the bodies and transport the parts to the farm. He said the bodies were burned in a bathtub of bensene and the remains dumped in the lake. 'I believe that a head which came out of a bag which I placed in the tub was that of Yvonne Rivers.' Holman told the investigators."

    "CULT LEADER INDICTED
New York (AP) -- Self-styled Bishop Devernon LeGrand was indicted Thursday on charges of murdering and dismembering four members of his Brooklyn cult of begging nuns, whose alms solicitations reportedly netted him $250,000 a year. A stepson, Steven Strong, also known as Steven LeGrand, was indicted with him, in the slaying of two sisters, Gladys Rivera Stewart, 18, the bishop's daughter-in-law, and Yvonne Rivera, 16. Both men pleaded innocent. The bodies of the girls were dismembered and burned. The bones were thrown into a lake on a 58-acre summer camp maintained by LeGrand for his followers in the Catskill mountains near Liberty, N.Y. about 100 miles from New York City. The remains were recoverd last March as the result of a tip to Brooklyn Dist. Atty., Eugene Gold's office. LeGrand alone was charged with the additional murders of a so-called wife, Ann Sorise, about 30, who was shot, beaten and dismembered in September 1963, and another 'wife,' Ernestine Timmons, also about 30, who was stomped, beaten and dismembered. All four women, according to the indictment were slain in LeGrand's St. John's Pentecostal Church."

A Job Description Contradicted by Killings
He ran a house of God, he said, but it turned out to be a house of horrors.
In the 1970's, women in black habits resembling those of nuns became a familiar sight in New York City as they solicited alms on the street and in the subway. Actually, they were from St. John's Pentecostal Church of Our Lord, which Devernon LeGrand, who called himself a bishop, presided over in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
Soon, the public learned that there was more to Mr. LeGrand than his dispatch of charity seekers whose garb confused many New Yorkers. In 1975, he and a son were convicted of raping a young woman in the four-story building at 222 Brooklyn Avenue that housed the church and the LeGrand family.
Then, amid bigger headlines in 1977, he and a stepson were convicted of charges that in 1975 they had beaten and stomped two teenage sisters to death in the building and dismembered their bodies. The men murdered the sisters, the prosecutors said, to keep them from testifying in the rape case. Later in 1977, Mr. LeGrand was convicted of having similarly murdered and dismembered his wife in 1970 in the Brooklyn building.
Now 77, Mr. LeGrand has served 27 years of his prison sentence (25 years to life) for the three murder convictions and the rape. He is to be considered for parole in October. He was first considered for parole in early 2001, after reaching the minimum 25 years of his term. He insisted he had not been involved in any of the crimes but had been the victim of lying witnesses and an ambitious prosecutor.
''I was a minister, and I liked a lot of women,'' he told the parole commissioners interviewing him at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, N.Y., where he is confined. But he said he had ''nothing to do with that woman,'' referring to the rape victim. He blamed the sisters' killings on the husband of one of them. And his own wife's killing? ''She's in Africa,'' he said. ''She left and went to Africa.''
In denying him release then, the parole commissioners said, ''Your conduct indicates a depraved indifference for human life and no respect for the law.''
As for 222 Brooklyn Avenue, it is the site these days of St. Joseph's Church of Christ and Home, with the Rev. Noconda LeGrand, a son of Mr. LeGrand, listed among the ministers.

In one of the articles, it says Ernestine divorced LeGrand in 1968. He's believed to have murdered her in 1970.

In one of the articles about his trial, it talks about a man who lived there that was encouraged by his mother to "do the right thing" and he tried to claim he was a part of the sister murders. I think it said this man used to work for the New York Medical Examiner.

So I am thinking this guy probably helped to dismember the vics.
