Michigan authorities seek information on boy's 1979 disappearance

ADDISON, Mich. Michigan authorities are seeking fresh information about the case of a 15-year-old boy who disappeared more than three decades ago after being suspended from high school.

State police Detective Sgt. Larry Rothman recently reopened the case of Andrew Jackson "Drew" Greer Jr., who was reported missing on Feb. 12, 1979.

The Daily Telegram of Adrian reports that Rothman discovered that information about Greer hadn't previously been put into any database of missing persons. That addition was made in December and Rothman says investigators have "better tools in our box now."

Greer's case was revisited by authorities in Lenawee County in 2000. Detective Bob Wolverton examined the original state police report and interviewed family members, Greer's friends and Addison school staff. No additional evidence surfaced at the time.

New technology, tools to help in Clayton's 1979 missing teen case

    CLAYTON
Samples of DNA from family members of a Lenawee County teen who disappeared 37 years ago are currently being compared to unidentified remains from across the country as efforts continue to solve the cold case.

Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Larry Rothman said that during the past year he conducted a number of interviews and is “pursuing some investigational leads” in the 1979 disappearance of Andrew Jackson “Drew” Greer Jr.

Greer, then a 15-year-old Addison High School student, vanished on Feb. 12, 1979.

Over the years, Greer’s half-brother, James Bowman, said he heard only rumors about what happened to Greer, and he and members of his family now seek closure.

Two rumors circulated the Addison school campus and beyond that Greer was allegedly killed and buried near a barn, or he was last seen hitchhiking along U.S. 127 near Hudson.

No solid evidence to support either scenario came to light.

The original investigation in 1979 resulted in no leads as to Greer’s whereabouts; the trail fell cold, and Greer was quietly dropped from the Addison school enrollment roster on March 8 of that year.

Greer’s case was revisited in April 2000 at the request of his father, Andrew Greer Sr. According to a report released by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department, Greer was “very ill with cancer, and is desperate to find some closure.”

A new investigation at the time failed to generate any new information or leads and the case again was mothballed.

In December 2014, at the request of Bowman and with new technology tools available, Rothman reopened Greer’s case, and found that Greer was never entered into any missing person’s database.

That was remedied and Greer became Case No. 1241677 in the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children network through the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

At the time of his disappearance, Greer was a slim person weighing 150 pounds, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with medium-length, wavy, blond hair.

His case file on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System can be found at

Rothman said he continues to look for anyone who knew Greer or his family, or who may be able to offer information about his disappearance. He can be reached at 517-263-1413.
