ST DAVID - Cochise County Sheriff’s Office authorities are attempting to identify the skeletal human remains found Wednesday in St. David.

Detectives responded to the scene at about 5 p.m. May 25 after Arizona Department of Environmental Quality personnel working in an area near the San Pedro River reported the discovery, according to a CCSO news release posted on the agency’s Facebook page.

“Sheriff's Detectives responded to the scene and located/recovered several human skeletal bones from a body that appeared to be in the area for a significant amount of time (up to one year),” the release states.

Additionally, clothing and items found near the bones lead authorities to believe the remains could be those of someone who entered the country illegally and had been at that location for “a significant amount of time.”

Authorities are hoping other items, clothing and a necklace, can help shed some light on the person’s identity. The victim’s race, age and gender are unknown and authorities hope the Pima County Medical Examiner, where remains have been transported, can help answer those questions.

The Mexican Consulate has been notified, according to the news release. “A necklace found at the site may provide additional clues… ” the CCSO release states.

Anyone who may have information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (520) 432-9500.

Investigation continues with additional information to be released as it becomes available.
